Mostly self-taught (at least for the past year)- I learned digital myself, but went to an art school to hang around other art kids and learn new things about traditional art.

Great stuff. I can tell you really "get" painting in a way I probably never will. it's just so different from the hard-edged brush and ink stuff I've done most my life, almost the opposite idea, really.

I use a hard round brush for 99% of my portraits ;)
You can definitely learn to paint like this!  This was my work just over 2 years ago.

Yeah ... the problem definitely isn't the Photoshop brush. Haha. I've been doing traditional brush inking since the '80s and the brain is trained to get each like down "perfectly" the first time and then move on to the next line, whereas with painting it's almost the opposite: a person can go in as many times as they want, smear it around, blend, go over bits to fix them, etc. It's hard to retrain the brain at my age so my painting all wind up looking like an ink artist trying to paint. Luckily most the stuff I paint is supposed to look like lousy old B-movie posters ... so that kinda works!
